bcci chief again elected srinivasan | Srinivasan re-elected as BCCI chief

New Delhi – India’s embattled cricket chief N. Srinivasan won a third term in office Sunday even though a Supreme Court order bars him from taking charge immediately due to a corruption scandal.
The 68-year-old cement tycoon, one of the most powerful men in world cricket, was elected unopposed for another year at the annual meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Chennai.
“Mr. N. Srinivasan was unanimously elected as President of the BCCI for the year 2013-14,” a statement from the cricket board said, without elaborating. It only detailed the names of office-bearers and members of various committees.
The Supreme Court had on Friday barred Srinivasan from taking charge until it has ruled on a petition against him over a spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a popular Twenty20 event.
A cricket body in the eastern state of Bihar which is not affiliated to the BCCI had asked the court to prevent Srinivasan from heading the BCCI on moral grounds because his son-in-law had been charged in the scandal.
The son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, is among several officials, players and bookmakers charged with cheating and criminal conspiracy, although the BCCI chief himself has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
The BCCI did not say who will head the body until the Supreme Court’s verdict, or whether fresh elections will be held if Srinivasan is subsequently barred from holding office.
Srinivasan temporarily stepped aside as president in June when Meiyaappan was named in the scandal, and handed interim control to Jagmohan Dalmiya, a former head of the International Cricket Council.
However the tycoon has continued to pull the strings behind the scenes and on Wednesday ensured that his bete noire, IPL founder Lalit Modi, was banned for life from the sport.
Srinivasan has publicly distanced himself from his son-in-law, who was the team principal of the Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise owned by India Cements and captained by national skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The Bihar association had argued in court that an internal BCCI probe panel had absolved Srinivasan, Meiyappan, India Cements and other IPL officials of wrongdoing even before police had filed charges in court.
Sanjay Patel was confirmed as the new BCCI secretary, three months after he took temporary charge from Sanjay Jagdale, who resigned in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal.
Former first-class cricketer Ranjib Biswal was appointed chairman of the IPL, succeeding Rajiv Shukla who too had quit after the scandal broke.
Srinivasan’s hold on world cricket stems from India’s vast television audience which enables the country to generate almost 70 percent of the game’s revenues.
International news organisations, including Agence France-Presse, have suspended their on-field coverage of matches hosted by the BCCI since last year after the board imposed restrictions on picture agencies.

Dubai – Afghanistan can reach the World Cup for the first time if they clinch back-to-back wins over Kenya in Sharjah on Wednesday and Friday.

Dubai  – Afghanistan can reach the World Cup for the first time if they clinch back-to-back wins over Kenya in Sharjah on Wednesday and Friday.
With 15 points from 12 matches, Afghanistan are currently in fourth place in the eight-team World Cricket League.
Leaders Ireland, with 24 points, have already made sure of their place in the 2015 World Cup leaving the United Arab Emirates (18 points) and Afghanistan as the only two teams left in contention to grab the second and final automatic qualifying spot.
The UAE on Sunday defeated Namibia by 135 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in their last group game to move into second spot in the table and eliminate third-placed Netherlands (also 18 points) from the direct qualification race by virtue of having won more matches.
Afghanistan now must beat Kenya in their remaining one-day internationals on October 2 and 4 to pick up maximum points and seize second spot from the UAE.
While the top two sides qualify automatically for the 2015 World Cup, being played in Australia and New Zealand, the bottom six teams in the World Cricket League will receive a second chance to advance at next year’s qualifier in New Zealand, when they will lock horns with Hong Kong, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Uganda for the final two spots in the flagship 50-over tournament.
On Sunday, the UAE’s Shaiman Anwar again led with the bat, with a knock of 57 making him the highest run-getter of the tournament (625 runs from 14 innings) and helping his side to a total of 215 all out.
Twenty-four year old Rohan Mustafa contributed 39.
In response, Namibia lost some early wickets and never recovered, with Mustafa following up his performance with the bat to claim three wickets for eight runs which helped dismiss Namibia for just 80.
“Winning and moving to second place was what we always wanted before the Namibia matches,” said UAE coach and former Pakistan fast bowler Aqib Javed.
“Now we have to see what happens when Afghanistan play Kenya.”
Despite the importance of those clashes, Aqib doesn’t think he’ll be at the Sharjah stadium to watch.
“I’m not a good spectator,” he said.

pietersen can set a example of leading said by morgan | Pietersen can lead by example: Morgan | morgan idealize pietersen as captain

LONDON  – England batsman Eoin Morgan says Kevin Pietersen will have an important role to play in the one-day international series against Australia, which starts at Headingley on Friday.
With Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann all rested after a successful Ashes campaign, Morgan will lead some unfamiliar faces into battle against the tourists.
Given the lack of experience in the England line-up, Morgan has urged 33-year-old Surrey batsman Pietersen to lead the way.
“Kev offers a hell of a lot as a senior player and as a batsman,” Morgan told a press conference.
“As a senior player he leads by example with the confidence with which he goes about his business. People rub off on that and that’s crucial.
“When I first came into the team, he was one of the more senior players and he was a guy you could turn to and ask difficult questions or have no hesitation in turning to him for a positive option.
“In that regard, I think he’s fantastic to have in the squad and back in for the one-day series.”
Despite the absences of Bell and regular captain Cook, Morgan said that Pietersen was not guaranteed to open the batting against the Australians.
“It’s certainly an option. Kev’s opened the batting for England before and done well,” he said.
“He also bats in the middle-order as a very explosive player. He’s very versatile in that regard so we’ll be looking at both options.”
Morgan said that whoever was selected to open the batting would be “filling big shoes”.
“Cooky and Belly have been very successful now for a couple of years and they’ve been a huge part of our success as a one-day team,” said the Irishman.
“With the two new balls in one-day cricket it makes that role more difficult now, so it’s an important role and one that we recognise needs filling.”
Sussex bowler Chris Jordan could make his England debut on Friday and Morgan says working alongside budding debutants has been the highlight of his role so far.
“Those games (as captain) in particular I’ve really enjoyed. The things I’ve most enjoyed about them has been handing out caps to debutants, he said.
“It’s fantastic to see guys being rewarded for a lot of hard work over a number of years and being rewarded by pulling the England shirt on and that makes me smile every day.”
